CHUAH Yu Tian has many talents which were nurtured which produced excellent results in studies and sports the last decade.

The 21-year-old’s Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) meets collection speaks for itself.

She won her first medals — silver in 80m hurdles and silver in the group exercise artistic gymnastics while scoring 7As in her Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR). She also passed her Grade 6 in piano, all in 2005.

Then she won a gold in the girls’ Under-15 triple jump and silver in long jump in 2008, followed by a gold in the Under-18 long jump in Kuala Lumpur in 2009 and a long jump bronze in 2010.

Currently, Yu Tian is pursuing her Bachelor of Science Honours majoring in Petroleum Chemistry at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang.

Despite her exploits on the athletics field, she still managed to score 9As and a B in her SPM examination in 2010.

That year in June, she also tried her hands in the pole vault after being persuaded by her horizontal jumps coach Zainal Abas.

She is now Malaysia’s top ranked pole vaulter after the retirement of Roslinda Samsu and the early exit of Kathleen Ong due to a back injury.

At present, she is under the tutelage of former national pole vault champion Teh Weng Chang.

She set her personal best of 3.55m at the 2012 Malaysia Games in Kuantan.

Her target is to scale to 3.60m at May’s Malaysia Games in Kangar.

She cleared 3.20m to claim the pole vault gold medal by edging BJSS student Valery Tan (2.90m) at the FTKLAA Pre Malaysia Games Athletics Open Championships in Bukit Jalil on March 22.

Being the eldest among three girls, naturally her sisters followed closely in her footsteps.

Yu Jing, 18, is a triple jumper and Yu Tang,16, a 100m hurdler in SMK Hua Lian in Taiping.

The brilliant Yu Tian said: “From a young age, I have had a love for sports.

“My idol is world and Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia.

“Just like Yelena, I want to have a ‘never say die’ attitude and an indomitable fighting spirit.”
