KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Mohd Irfan Shamsuddin again rewrote his national discus record, taking his tally to four in one week.

The Negri Sembilan-born athlete twice broke the record in the Liese Prokop Memorial Open Athletics Championships in St Polten, Austria, on Sunday.

Irfan, who is in Europe for a two-month training-cum-competition stint, cleared 58.47m and then 58.48m. Despite his gallant efforts, he could only manage fourth place in the seven-man competition.

Austrian Lukas Weisshaidinger emerged champion with a hurl of 65.17m. Croatia Roland Varga cleared 62.56m to take the silver while compatriot Martin Markovic was third with a 59.91m clearance.

The 20-year-old Irfan also broke the national mark twice at the Under-23 Hallesche Wefertage Open Athletics Championships in Halle, Germany, on May 22.

He registered 58.21m in his first attempt and 58.33m in the fourth throw to erase the old record of 58.04m he set in the Malaysian Open in March last year.

Irfan, a two-time SEA Games gold medallist, was elated with his one-week work.

“This is my best achievement. I have improved my record by 15cm in just one week,” said Irfan.

“Now I feel confident that I’ll further improve my record in the next outing. It’s good to compete against these Europeans. They bring the best out of me. And they are all very good and able to throw beyond 60m.

“In the next meet, I want to finish on the podium. I don’t want to finish fourth all the time,” said Irfan.
