KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Ashikin Abas upstaged national athlete R. Kirthana to win the women’s triple jump gold medal with a leap of 12.72m on the first day of the Saeca-BJSS Athletics Championships at NSC Training Track in Bukit Jalil today.
The 25-year-old Kirthana, who finished fourth in the Hanoi Sea Games in May, only managed 12.69m for the silver, while Nurul Fatin Najiha Aziz took bronze with 11.65m.
“I am just a state-level athlete, so winning here is a bonus. The win will inspire me to train harder,” said Ashikin, 22, today.
“Overall, it has been a good season. I achieved a personal-best mark of 13.05 for the Pahang Open title in July and won the Malaysia Games titles (12.88),” said the Perak-born, who has to clear 13.45m to earn a Sea Games spot for next year’s Phnom Penh Games.
The 25-year-old Kirthana, who has a PB of 13.48m, said she had just recovered from a hamstring injury.
“This is my first competition since the Hanoi Sea Games,” said Kirthana.
Meanwhile, S. Tharshan clocked a PB of 22.54s to win the men’s 200m gold.
Tharshan, a Selangor-born pre-university student of Bukit Jalil Sports School, said: “I am surprised as I only entered the 200m to condition myself for the 400m tomorrow. I hope to improve my 400m PB of 49.57s tomorrow.”
Teenager Nur Afrina Batrisyia Rizal upstaged national sprinter S. Komalam to win the women’s 200m in 25.19s.
Komalam, who has a PB of 24.18s, clocked 26.25s to settle for silver, while Ayu Nur Rebecca Nurman of Sabah bagged bronze in 27.18s.
The 18-year-old Nur Afrina from Selangor said she was not pleased with her effort despite overcoming Komalam for the gold.
“I clocked 24.83s during the Malaysia Games, so I am unhappy with my timing today,” she said.
