FOR the first time ever, a 21-part athletic coaching book written in Bahasa Malaysia has been unveiled to the public.

Written by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) sports pedagogy lecturer Dr J. Sanmuga Nathan, the book titled Pencerahan Kejurulatihan Olahraga (Athletic Enlightenment Coaching) aims at providing exposure and enlightenment on athletic coaching.

Several track and field events such as middle-distance running and throwing events have been selected to guide coaches on teaching such events systematically.

Penang Amateur Athletics Association (PAAA) president Datuk Syed Mohamad Aidid said he was confident that the performance of Penang’s athletes would further improve.

“I hope this book will benefit coaches and athletes.

“I also urge Penang athletes to stay committed in training and bringing honour to the state and country in all sporting events,” he said at the recent book launching at The Safe Room in Campbell Street, George Town.

Dr Sanmuga said he wrote the book to share his knowledge with others.

“Having been a track and field coach for more than 20 years,I believe that the best form of coaching is to be fluent inpractice-based methods.

“Therefore, I hope more coaches in this field will be inspired to write such books in the future,” he said.

At the same event, PAAA also honoured the Penang athletic team for bagging 16 medals at the Malaysia Schools Sports Council (MSSM) track and field event in Selangor in April.

The team bagged six gold, five silver and five bronze.

PAAA secretary V. Govindasamy said this was the team’s best performance in 19 years.

“In the past, we usually win one or two gold medals.

“But this time we can see that they have improved tremendously and we hope they can scale greater heights in the future,” he said.

The athletes were symbolically given incentives of between RM30 and RM70.
