Lack of Target in 2017 SEA Games

JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM – It is painful to see that Indonesia has set no target for the upcoming 2017 SEA Games (Southeast Asian Games). Indonesia will send between 350 and 400 athletes to Malaysia.

All stakeholders, from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Gold for Indonesia Task Force and National Sports Committee of Indonesia are still unsure in setting priorities for the upcoming SEA Games, to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 19-30 August. Indonesia was the overall champion in ten SEA Games.

The stakeholders said that there is no specific target as Indonesia is readying to host the 2018 Asian Games.

Other stakeholders, including the Indonesian Olympic Committee and competing sports organizations are more serious, by preparing and selecting the athletes who have strong potentials to win medals.

Ahmad Sutjipto, Head of Gold for Indonesia Task Force, said there are six sports where Indonesia may win many medals, including athletics, bike racing, pencak silat, weightlifting and karate.

Previously the task force targeted 50 to 60 medals from the upcoming event, about 15 percent of the total of 405 available medals. (*)
