International athletes Kennedy KiprooLilan and Mugo Hellen Wanjiku, both from Kenya, were named champions at The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 today.
Kennedy and Helen won the race with respective times of two hours, 17 minutes and 47 seconds and two hours, 43 minutes and 22 seconds.
Malaysian marathoners were not far behind with Muhaizar Mohamad earning the Full Marathon Malaysian Men’s Title and Loh Chooi Fern taking the Malaysian Women’s category with a time of 02:41:11 and 3:25:52 respectively.
Both Muhaizar and Chooi Fern were part of the Dirigo Atheletes Development Programme which aims to develop a corp of world-class running talent within the country.
This year, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon introduced a new route for the event which took runners to some of the busiest highways of the city namely the Duta-UluKlang (DUKE) Highway and the Ampang Elevated Highway (AKLEH).
Rainer Biemans, director of Dirigo Events, the owner and organiser of Standard Chartered KL Marathon, was delighted that the new route worked out for the runners.
“It’s a good shift for us and for them in keeping the race fresh as well as challenging,” Rainer said in a statement.
The prize package offered this year amounted to approximately RM376,524 (US$116,740).
Another additional feature were winners of the MSIG 10km category Open Champion who were awarded a pair of tickets to Osaka, Japan courtesy of gold sponsor, MSIG Insurance.
Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia Khairy Jamaluddin who took on the 10km Speed category in support of the event completed the race within the one hour time frame. – October 12, 2014.
