KUALA LUMPUR: Grace Wong smashed her own national women’s hammer throw record with a 62.48m heave on the first day of the Malaysian Athletics Grand Prix at National Sports Council (NSC) Training Track in Bukit Jalil today.
The Sarawakian erased the old record of 60.99m, set at the South Korea Open in Mokpo in 2017, by 1.49m.
The 21-year-old, whose last meet was the 2019 Philippines Sea Games, managed 60.19m in her first throw, followed by 59.52m in her second attempt.
However, she surprised everyone by recording 62.48m in her third attempt.
Grace, a silver medallist at the 2019 Sea Games, was delighted with her effort in her first meet in 16 months.
“It is a dream start on my return to competition. With this, I have qualified for this year’s Vietnam Sea Games by beating my silver-medal mark of 55.82m,” said Grace.
